Laura Soulliere Gates - 2020

About the artist

Gates' work has been juried into a number of regional and national competitions over the past 20 years. She has won numerous awards including an honorable mention in the September Competition of the Alexandria Museum of Art. She has exhibited in group and solo shows in the southeast. Her work is in private and institutional collections in the United States and several foreign countries. “I paint the landscape of Louisiana and other evocative places either in the studio or en plein air. The hidden vista around the corner, an intimate landscape discovered in my wanderings through the woods, or a massive landscape of enormous scale - these are places that resonate with me,” says Gates. “Each of my paintings seeks to capture the character-defining features of place, using color to create light and form. Each painting is an exploration. I paint with knives and pure pigment to capture the freshness and immediacy of the experience.”
